A young 16-year-old high school student-athlete, named Ashari Hughes who hailed from Las Vegas collapsed and unfortunately died after experiencing a “medical emergency” while playing flag football on Thursday, 5th of January 2023.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has reported that Desert Oasis High School principal Ian Salzman stated in an email that Ashari experienced a “medical emergency” and the campus staff members promptly provided all the medical help until the paramedics arrived during the school’s home game against Valley High School. The cause of the death has not been disclosed.
A family member informed KVVU-TV that Hughes Ashari was seeing a cardiologist due to some cardiac issues. They stated, ‘apart from her doctor’s approval to compete in sports, her parents were debating taking her out to have her condition reevaluated. Superintendent of schools for Las Vegas, Jesus Jara, has issued a statement in which he has described the district’s sympathy for Hughes’ family, friends, and for loved ones. The loss of this young one deeply saddens all.” Jara stated.
“She was truly passionate, loving, and determined. She loved music, dancing, and being around all the people and dear ones. She called football the real love of her life! She loved hard and was loved by all. Hold the #7 up high for her! It was her first football number and she always wanted to represent it!” her family stated

Hughes’ tragic passing came a few days after Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills experienced a cardiac attack and passed out on the field after taking a hard tackle to his chest. Buffalo player was resuscitated on the ground on Monday, 2nd of January during the NFL game against the team Cincinnati Bengals. The Buffalo Bills on Friday stated, “Hamlin is now talking to his family and he is breathing on his own. His neurologic function is intact, as to the team he continues to improve amazingly in recuperation.”
