How Do The MAMA Awards Work?

Since the competition’s beginning in South Korea, K-pop singers have won the majority of the medals. Despite other Asian musicians taking home honours for Best Asian Artist and other accolades.

In 1999, the first awards ceremony was held in Seoul and broadcast on Mnet. Since 2010, MAMA has also been staged in a number of other Asian cities. And nations besides South Korea, and it now broadcasts online globally outside of Asia.

The Complete Ceremony

Mnet Music Video Festival was launched in 1999 as a music video awards programme modeled after MTV Video Music Awards. In 2004, KMTV Korean Music Awards and Mnet KM Music Video Festival were combined to become the Mnet KM Music Video Festival. During the middle of the 2000s, Hallyu’s popularity gained international attention. And in 2008 the show was broadcast in China and Japan.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) received its current name in 2009 to more accurately reflect their international expansion. The first time MAMA was hosted outside of South Korea was in Macau in 2010. In 2017, the awards ceremony took place over four evenings and included events in Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong. And other locations in addition to Hong Kong.
