“There are several people that would like to see him right now,” stated Philip Hearn, a Jackson-based attorney representing laid-off United Furniture workers from Mississippi. “I have talked with people who know he is in Paris and have been in the touch with him.”

United Industries is based near Tupelo in Okolona. United Furniture manufactures furniture under its brand and the Lane Home Furnishings brand, which it acquired from the Heritage Home Group LLC for an undisclosed sum in 2017. Lane was established in 1912 in Virginia and merged with the Tupelo-based Action Industries in 1972.

Later on, Belford, as noted in the New York Post Story, is well known for his philanthropic efforts in previous years, even as he has landed in the legal scraps and contentious bankruptcy proceedings, as per the news reports and the court documents.
United Furniture had become the largest furniture business all across the country before Belford laid off nearly its entire workforce, most of which hailed from Northeast Mississippi. Belford’s number is no longer in service. Attempts were also made to make calls to Belford’s brother Steve, but those calls have yet to be returned.
As per the story from the Associated Press, after workers had been laid off via email, one more email was sent for informing them that their “layoff from the company has expected to be permanent and all benefits will be terminated immediately without any provision of COBRA,” referring to the federal law that gives people who lose their jobs an option to keep their employer-sponsored health insurance coverage under few circumstances.

A class action lawsuit was filed on 30 Nov in district court of the U.S. for the Northern District of the Mississippi against David Belford and United Industries.
As per the New York Post story,’ an American Freight, a discount furniture company that his brother Steve established 28 years ago and later on sold sued Belford last year, alleging that he stole trade secrets and he also violated non-compete agreements after being bought out by its new owner for 15 million dollars. His investment, Stage Capital, and a company he owned were also named in the complaint,’ American Freight’s former CEO, Asaph Rink.
David has a real estate portfolio amounting to $24 million.
