The alleged assault took place more than 30 years ago. In a letter to the people of St. Sabina Parish, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, the archbishop of Chicago, stated,
“In keeping with our child protection policies, Father Pfleger has been asked to step aside from ministry and live away from the parish while the allegation is investigated. He has agreed to cooperate fully with this request.”
The 73-year-old priest’s complainant is a man in his late 40s who says Pfleger sexually assaulted him twice in the late 1980s during choir practices, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

In response to these claims, Pfleger denied the allegations, saying,
“Let me be clear – I am completely innocent of this accusation. While I am confident that the new allegation will also be determined to be unfounded, this process is so unfair and painful to me and to the community I serve.”

He attended Loyola University, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, and Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary South. On May 14, 1975, he was consecrated as a priest for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.
He adopted his first son Lamar, a United States Army recruit, in 1981. He adopted Beronti in 1992, who passed away on May 20, 2012, after battling an illness for a few years. He adopted Jarvis Franklin in 1997, who was murdered by a stray gunshot on May 30, 1998. Michael is unmarried.
