About Siddi community

The community of Siddi is a very small ethnic group with African ancestry that hails from India, particularly based in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and also in Andhra Pradesh.

They are believed to have migrated from the country of Africa to India being slaves, merchants, or sailors, and over time, they have assimilated into Indian culture while also preserving distinct traditions and other practices.

They follow the syncretic faith which can be combined with all elements such as Islam, Christianity, and traditional African religions. Small-scale businesses are one of the basic sources of livelihood for the Siddi people.

Apart from facing all types of discrimination and social exclusion, the community of Siddi has made many significant contributions to society, more particularly in the fields of sports and the military. Several notable Siddi individuals achieved success in different fields, including track and field, cricket, and the armed forces, among many others.
